Home: Scouter Paul Barker
The East Burlington Scouting Family lost a member and a friend on the Victoria Day 2003 weekend. Scouter Paul Barker passed away on Saturday May 17, 2003 after bravely battling cancer for nearly a year.
Scouter Paul first joined 10th Burlington as a Scout Counsellor in the fall of 2001. He had joined us as a parent helper on several camps during the 2000 / 2001 Scouting year, including our first rappelling camp, and his enthusiasm and skills led to his recruitment by the leadership team. He was invested as a leader at the Fall Skills camp campfire in November 2001. During the 2001/2002 year he was an enthusiastic participant in many camps including the District Winter Camp, and along with PL Cory M. organized our first ever Troop Ski Trip. The Ski Trip has since become a Troop tradition. His laid-back manner and subtle sense of humour made Scouter Paul a memorable presence in the Troop. Scouter Paul took his Wood Badge Part I leader training in the spring of 2002, and was treasurer for 10th Burlington for the 2001/2002 year. Scouter Paul was also a good photographer, and several of his photos grace the pages of this website.
Though undergoing treatment for his illness this year, he remained registered as a leader and participated in meetings and events as his health allowed. His last Scouting event was the 10th/15th Burlington banquet at the end of February.
Our thoughts go out to Scouter Paul's family in this time of loss. While Scouter Paul has "Gone Home" and we should mourn his passing, we must also celebrate his life and remember that because of his influence and example, he has made us better people for knowing him.
